You are cordially invited to this year’s TechTalks: Projects Worth Seeing

Come see Francisco Martinez, Ashlande Evans, and Karen Hernandez present their Senior Projects!

These three MNTHS seniors are presenting projects they have been working on as individuals for this school year. Each student fully designed, researched, and implemented a project of their choosing that would have an impact on their community in someway. This is a very rigorous process that runs very similar to a college freshman seminar course. These students have had to be very independent and disciplined to get to the end.

Ashlande Evans’s project is titled “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and is about helping Manor’s food pantry.

Francisco Martinez’s project is titled “Reducing Child Hunger, One Kid at a Time” and is about hunger and working with multiple organizations to help people in need.

Karen Hernandez’s project is titled “Kids and Soccer” and was to create an ACE program about health and soccer. She ran her program at Manor Elementary for 5 months with third graders.

MANOR NEW TECH HIGH PRINCIPAL TO VISIT WHITE HOUSE FOR BRAINSTORMING SESSION

Just two weeks after President Barack Obama’s historic visit to Manor New Technology High School, Principal Steven Zipkes is headed to the White House. On Thursday, May 23, Zipkes will join Arne Duncan, Secretary of the Department of Education, James Kvaal, Deputy Director of the Domestic Policy Council, and Gene Sperling, Director of the National Economic Council, in an informal brainstorming session to discuss how to engage employers in building skills through redesigned high schools. Twenty other leaders in business and education will also be in attendance, including Michele Cahill, Vice-President and Program Director of the Carnegie Corporation and Stan Litow, President of the IBM International Foundation.

“I’ve always told my teachers they are changing education,” said Zipkes. “Now there’s an opportunity to share Manor New Tech’s best practices and affect change at the national level. I’m honored to be the voice that gets to tell our students’ and teachers’ story.”

Manor New Tech has gained international attention as a successful example of public high school redesign, hailed by President Obama on May 9 as “an example for the nation” and highlighted by Secretary Duncan in 2010 as a “model for reaching underserved students”. In addition to its 97% attendance rate, the school has consistently outperformed the state average in the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test. It has been featured in numerous academic “white papers”, which conclude that the school is successfully “closing the learning gap” with historically underperforming students from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Engaged in a curriculum of 100% project based learning, students are not only evaluated in subject area knowledge, but also a variety of “21st Century Skills”, including technology literacy, critical thinking, work ethic, and oral communication.

“Our business partners get it,” said Zipkes. “When they visit our classrooms and see what our students are doing, they get excited and tell me over and over ‘This is getting them ready for the workforce. This is what we’re looking for when we hire people.’”

The campus is also home to the Think Forward PBL Academy, where Manor New Tech teachers have trained over 1,000 educators from over seven states and two countries in project based learning pedagogy.

WASHINGTON – A global climate expert from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will share the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season forecast during a free webinar Tuesday, May 28 hosted by SBA and Agility Recovery.
